About this calculator

The Wilks coefficient is a mathematical formula that normalises powerlifting totals across bodyweight classes, allowing fair comparison between lighter and heavier lifters. Developed by Robert Wilks for Powerlifting Australia, it uses a polynomial equation that accounts for the non-linear relationship between bodyweight and maximum strength. The IPF replaced Wilks with the IPF GL Points formula in 2019 for official competition scoring, but Wilks remains widely used in the community as a relative strength benchmark. A Wilks score above 300 is considered competitive; elite lifters regularly exceed 400–450.

How to interpret your results

Your Wilks score allows you to compare your relative strength directly against any other lifter regardless of bodyweight. A higher score means you are lifting more relative to what is expected for your size. Use it to track personal progress across weight changes — if you move up a bodyweight class while maintaining or improving your Wilks score, your relative strength has not been compromised. In online communities and gym environments, Wilks is used as a friendly benchmark for answering the perennial question "who is the stronger lifter?"

The science and formula

The Wilks formula: Score = total × coeff, where coeff = 500 / (a + b×w + c×w² + d×w³ + e×w⁴ + f×w⁵), with w = bodyweight in kg. The polynomial constants differ for men and women (Wilks 1991). The formula was derived by fitting a curve to the theoretical maximum lifts achievable at each bodyweight class, based on historical world records. This non-linear approach captures the physiological reality that absolute strength does not scale linearly with body mass — heavier lifters are stronger in absolute terms but weaker in relative (strength-to-bodyweight) terms, with the relationship following a power function.

Important limitations

Wilks coefficients become less accurate at the extremes of bodyweight — very light lifters (below 56 kg) and very heavy lifters (above 140 kg) may be systematically advantaged or disadvantaged by the formula. This is partly why the IPF updated to GL Points in 2019 using more recent competition data. Wilks also does not account for leverages, limb length, or federation-specific rule differences (equipped vs raw, different depth standards). It should be used as an orientation tool, not a definitive ranking of athlete quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Wilks score?

For powerlifting, 200–300 is recreational/intermediate, 300–400 is competitive, 400–450 is national-level, and 450+ is elite. These benchmarks apply to the powerlifting total (squat + bench + deadlift). Single-lift Wilks scores are lower.

Is Wilks still used in official powerlifting competitions?

The IPF (International Powerlifting Federation) replaced Wilks with IPF GL Points in 2019 for all sanctioned meets. However, many national federations, gyms, and online communities still use Wilks as a familiar reference point for comparing relative strength.

What is the difference between Wilks and IPF GL Points?

Both attempt to equalise strength across bodyweights. IPF GL Points uses a different formula that was recalculated with modern competition data and is considered more accurate across extreme bodyweights (very light or very heavy lifters). For most intermediate lifters, the practical difference is small.

Can I use Wilks to compare my single-lift performance?

Yes — you can calculate a Wilks score for any individual lift (squat, bench press, or deadlift alone) by entering that single lift weight instead of the total. The comparison benchmarks are proportionally lower, as single-lift Wilks scores are roughly one-third of total Wilks scores for balanced lifters.

Does Wilks account for drug-tested versus untested federations?

No. Wilks is a formula applied to any lift total regardless of testing status. Totals in untested federations are generally higher than in tested federations at the same bodyweight, so Wilks scores are not directly comparable between tested and untested athletes without that context.

How do I improve my Wilks score?

Two paths: increase your total (squat + bench + deadlift) while maintaining bodyweight, or move to a lower bodyweight class while maintaining your total. The coefficient increases non-linearly as bodyweight decreases, so dropping weight while maintaining absolute strength can significantly boost Wilks score — a common competitive strategy.
