Training volume — the total mechanical work performed — is one of the primary drivers of muscle hypertrophy. It is calculated as sets × reps × weight. Research by Schoenfeld, Krieger, and others consistently shows a dose-response relationship between weekly volume and muscle growth, up to a maximum recoverable volume (MRV) that varies by individual and muscle group. Tracking volume over time lets you apply progressive overload systematically — even if weight stays constant, adding a set or rep increases volume and provides a new stimulus. Most evidence-based recommendations suggest 10–20 weekly sets per muscle group for hypertrophy, progressing from the lower end.
How to interpret your results
Use the calculated volume number to compare sessions week-over-week. If your total volume for a given muscle group or exercise is increasing over 4–8 weeks (either through added weight, reps, or sets), progressive overload is occurring. If volume has stagnated — same weight, same reps — it is time to adjust. Volume landmarks to watch: if weekly volume per muscle group falls below 10 sets, growth stimulus is likely insufficient; above 20 hard sets, most people exceed their recovery capacity and performance begins to decline. The science and formula
Volume = sets × reps × weight (load lifted), measured in kg or lbs. This metric, sometimes called "tonnage," captures the total mechanical work output. In meta-analyses by Krieger (2010) and Schoenfeld et al. (2017), higher weekly training volume consistently produced greater muscle cross-sectional area increases up to a point. The relationship plateaus and eventually inverts at very high volumes due to insufficient recovery. Volume is most meaningful when calculated per muscle group per week, as systemic volume (total training load) mixes different recovery demands. Sets taken to or near muscular failure are weighted more heavily in stimulating hypertrophy than partial-effort sets.
Important limitations
Volume as sets × reps × weight is an imperfect proxy for training stimulus because it treats all reps equally regardless of proximity to failure. A set of 10 reps at RPE 6 (four reps in reserve) contributes far less hypertrophic stimulus than the same weight × reps at RPE 9. This is why "effective reps" (the last 3–5 reps of a set approaching failure) are considered more physiologically important than total rep count. Volume tracking is most useful for trend analysis and ensuring progressive overload over time, not for prescribing exact weekly totals.

Should I track volume per exercise or per muscle group?
