About this calculator
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) measures the amount of muscle mass you carry relative to your height, calculated as fat-free mass (kg) divided by height² (m²). It was popularised by Kouri et al. (1995) as a way to assess whether a physique is achievable naturally. The study found that drug-free bodybuilders rarely exceeded an FFMI of 25 (normalised), while steroid users commonly scored 25–35. Normalised FFMI adjusts for height by calculating what your FFMI would be at 1.80 m. Average untrained men score around 19–20 FFMI; elite natural bodybuilders peak at 23–25.
How to interpret your results
Use your FFMI as a benchmark for muscular development, not a ceiling. For men: FFMI 17–19 is untrained/beginner, 19–21 is a few years of consistent training, 21–23 is experienced and well-trained, 23–25 is advanced natural development, and above 25 is either genetic outlier or potentially assisted (based on the Kouri study). For women, subtract approximately 4–5 points from male benchmarks due to lower natural testosterone and smaller absolute lean mass. Tracking FFMI over time alongside body fat percentage gives a more complete picture of physique development than scale weight alone.
The science and formula
FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) / height² (m²). Fat-free mass = total body weight × (1 − body fat fraction). Normalised FFMI corrects for height: nFFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.80 − height in metres). The normalisation formula (Kouri et al. 1995) was derived from the observation that taller people naturally carry proportionally more lean mass. The Kouri study compared 83 drug-free male athletes to 74 steroid users, finding that no drug-free athlete exceeded nFFMI 25 while 28% of steroid users did. This threshold has become widely cited in natural bodybuilding as the approximate genetic ceiling.
Important limitations
FFMI calculations are only as accurate as the body fat percentage input — errors in body fat measurement directly propagate. The "natural ceiling" of 25 is a statistical observation from one 1995 study, not a hard biological limit. A small number of natural athletes may genetically exceed this. FFMI also does not capture muscle distribution (one person with FFMI 22 may carry muscle predominantly in their legs while another has more upper body development). Women's FFMI benchmarks are less well-established in literature than men's, making female comparisons less precise.

How can I increase my FFMI?
FFMI increases when fat-free mass increases without equivalent height change (height is fixed). Building muscle through progressive resistance training and adequate protein intake (1.6–2.2 g/kg) directly raises fat-free mass. Reducing body fat while maintaining lean mass also increases the fraction of your weight that is lean, raising FFMI calculation accuracy.
Does FFMI apply to women?
Yes, though female-specific benchmarks are less well-established. Women naturally carry less lean mass relative to height due to lower testosterone. A rough female adjustment is to subtract 4–5 from male benchmarks — so FFMI 20–21 represents well-trained development for women. The Kouri study was conducted primarily on male subjects.
Is FFMI useful for non-bodybuilders?
Yes — FFMI is useful for anyone interested in tracking muscular development independent of total weight. For older adults, declining FFMI (from sarcopenia) is a health risk indicator.
