About this calculator

The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from neck, waist, and hip measurements with ±3–4% accuracy — no calipers or lab equipment required. It uses logarithmic equations developed by Hodgdon and Beckett (1984) and is widely used in military fitness assessments. For men, fat is estimated from waist and neck; for women, hip circumference is added. While DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing are more precise, the Navy method is the most practical field-based option and consistently outperforms BMI as a body composition indicator.

How to interpret your results

Once you have your body fat percentage, locate it against the category chart. For men: essential fat (2–5%) is the physiological minimum for survival; athletic (6–13%) is typical of competitive athletes; fitness (14–17%) is lean and healthy; acceptable (18–24%) is average for recreational exercisers; obese is above 25%. For women, add roughly 8–10% to each boundary. If you are trying to build muscle, body fat above 20% (men) or 30% (women) typically suggests a recomposition or cut phase before a dedicated bulk. Tracking the same measurement monthly — not daily — reveals meaningful trends. A drop of 1–2% body fat per month while maintaining lean mass is an excellent result.

The science and formula

The Navy method uses logarithmic equations because the relationship between circumference measurements and body fat is not linear. For men: %BF = 86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76. For women: %BF = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387. These equations were derived by Hodgdon and Beckett (1984) from a dataset of US Navy personnel and validated against hydrostatic weighing. The method assumes that circumference measurements correlate consistently with subcutaneous fat distribution, which holds reasonably well across average body compositions but breaks down at extremes.

Important limitations

The Navy method is less accurate for people with unusual fat distribution patterns — it can underestimate body fat in individuals who carry fat in areas not captured by the measurements (e.g., upper back or thighs) and overestimate in very muscular people with large neck or waist circumferences due to muscle rather than fat. Measurement error compounds quickly — a 1 cm error in waist measurement changes the result by approximately 1–2%. The formula was validated on military personnel, so accuracy may be lower for very sedentary or elderly populations. For greatest accuracy, take three measurements at each site and average them.

A sustainable rate is 0.5–1% of body weight per week, which corresponds to roughly 0.5 kg of fat per week for most people. Faster loss risks muscle tissue breakdown. At this rate, dropping from 25% to 15% body fat takes approximately 10–14 weeks depending on starting weight and deficit size.

Is body fat percentage more useful than BMI?

Yes, for most purposes. Body fat percentage directly measures fat mass versus lean mass, giving a clearer metabolic health picture. A person can have a normal BMI but high body fat percentage ("normal weight obesity"), which carries similar risks to conventional obesity. Body fat percentage is a more actionable metric for training and nutrition decisions.
